Reclaiming Control: The Road from Outsourced to In-House Development
From Outsource to In-House: A Story of Transformation
Hey there, digital nomads! I’ve got a story to share with you today. A story about a client who shifted gears from costly agency development to creating their own in-house team. A story that ends with a hardworking team, reduced costs, and a fully functional IT division. Buckle up, it’s a good one!
Our story starts when this client reached out to me, faced with a significant challenge. They had been developing their product using an agency, but the costs were skyrocketing. They had this novel idea: why not create their own in-house development team? Sounded good on paper, but there were a few hiccups.
I jumped on a call with them, and it quickly became clear they were struggling with a few key issues. The technical stuff was a bit over their heads, they were having trouble hiring the right people, and they didn’t know how to run the IT division.
Enter yours truly, wearing the consultant cap. I signed on for a three-month contract to help them set up their IT team and align the entire process. The goal was simple: an IT team on autopilot mode.
With sleeves rolled up, I dived headfirst into the hiring process. A few rounds of interviews later, we had a team of dedicated, passionate individuals ready to take on the world of IT.
Next came the processes. We started with requirement gathering, moved on to creating UI wireframes, navigated the exciting waters of development, and finally, delivery. The process was like a well-oiled machine, each step clearly defined, each action leading to the next.
One thing I knew from my experience is that no IT team is complete without a set of boilerplate codes. So, we created those. Then we set up a CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery) system. With that, we were able to automate the tedious bits of software release process and focus more on what mattered most: creating a fantastic product.
The result? The client was now spending a fraction of their initial cost, around 5x less than their agency costs. But it wasn’t just about the money. They now had their very own team, a well-oiled machine that was theirs to guide.
In the end, it was an intense journey, full of challenges and victories. And I like to think that this story is more than just a successful project. It’s a testament to what a dedicated team, clear processes, and a little bit of technical know-how can achieve.
But that’s enough about me. Have you had any experiences with setting up in-house teams? I’d love to hear your stories in the comments!
